At Matt Fiddes Martial Arts we offer a variety of different programs available throughout your training. Instructors have discretion in deciding which classes to run, where and when – to find out what classes are available to you please speak to your instructors. These are some of the classes and programmes we offer:

  • Mighty Matts class for 3 to 6 years old. We teach children how to develop respect and confidence, learning how to avoid strangers, pick up basic self-defence, and how to avoid dangerous situations. Classes are around 45 minutes long and our instructors are especially trained to teach children of this age group. All of our confidence-building exercises help to develop hand-eye coordination and motor skills. All Might matts are required to take a specially designed form to their teachers at school once a month (homework sheet). This has to be signed off by the teacher before the student can be considered to be put forward for their grading. This also needs to be signed by the parents to show that they are being well behaved and are showing respect at home!

  • Family classes for 7years plus, offer something for people of all abilities who want to improve their lives. Classes are designed to offer students the best Martial Arts education – whether you’re looking to lose weight or learn to defend yourself. An important point to note is that our students are taught that the physical side of what we teach them should only ever be used in self-defence. We constantly remind them that their Martial Arts skills should never be used for unwarranted aggression. All young students (Up to Secondary school age) are required to take a specially designed form to their teachers at school once a month (homework sheet). This has to be signed off by the teacher before the student can be considered to be put forward for their grading. This also needs to be signed by the parents to show that they are being well behaved and are showing respect at home!

  • Adults only classes, these allow adults to train at their own level and pace, making sure you’re not rushed or pushed into anything too quickly. The Matt Fiddes classes are a great way to meet new people who have similar goals, get fitter/ improve health, build confidence, and learn useful and practical self-defence skills. With some students in their 70s+ its never too late to start!

  • Master classes for Blue belts and above. These are additional classes that some instructors offer to benefit their higher belt level students, being able to dedicate more time to working on the intricate details that come with progressing to these levels. Being able to offer more time to the drills and skills that can be difficult to practice in a large family class due to safety & space.

  • Leadership classes, these are weapons and advanced skills classes, these classes are invitation only classes. To be invited your instructor needs to see you constantly working hard, pushing yourself as much as you can, always aiming to be better than you were last class, being a great role model for other students in the class and know they can trust you with the additional skills they are going to teach you. In these classes you will have the opportunity to learn how to use 5 different weapons – Boken, Escrima sticks, Tonfas, Bo staff, and Nunchucks. You will be able to work on advancements of your sparring and self defence skills, looking at knife defence and board breaking and more.

  • Junior Instructor programmes (JCIT programme) This programme is for the young students (Year 6 plus at school) who show fantastic attitude towards class, those who are always willing to try and help others around them and those who want to be excellent role models to others. These students will have the opportunity to assist their instructors in running the mighty matts classes, gaining valuable skills and knowledge of how to lead drills, how to positively correct someone else, how to communicate with others and how to keep watch for potential dangers during lessons. JCIT’s are also invited to 4 extra training days, typically held in Swindon, where all of the JCIT’s can get together and learn skills and share their knowledge with others on a similar journey.

  • Scholarship programme (in between JCIT and ACIT) This programme was introduced to help the transition between JCIT and ACIT courses. Scholarship is for those around the age of 16 to 18 years old. This is where we introduce more knowledge of how to run a whole class and how to begin preparing if in the future students would like to open their own schools and become a fully qualified instructor.

  • Advanced Instructor Programmes (ACIT programme) This programme if for those 18 years and above who also have a strong desire to help others become better versions of themselves. The ACIT course is an ongoing program designed for people who just want to assist their instructor to teach great classes or those who may one day want to run their own classes. This course goes into more depth about how a class is run, behind the scenes work it takes to make a class run efficiently, how to approach new students for their first ever class and how to communicate effectively with many different age ranges, all who will learn and understand things slightly differently.
